What is Link Equity (Link Juice)? How Internal Links Pass Authority
What is Link Equity?
Link equity, often called link juice, is the ranking value a hyperlink passes from one page to another. When a page with authority links to another page, part of that authority flows through the link and helps the destination page rank. PageRank, the algorithm Google introduced to score pages by the links pointing to them, is the original model of this idea: a page is considered important when other important pages link to it.
Link equity comes from external backlinks, but internal links decide where it goes once it reaches your site. Every internal link is a way to move authority from pages that have it (usually the homepage and popular articles) to pages that need it (product pages, landing pages, new content).
Why Link Equity Matters for SEO
Search engines use links to judge both importance and relevance. A page that receives many relevant internal links is treated as a key page of your site, while a page with few or no links looks secondary. Without a deliberate strategy, authority pools on pages that naturally attract links and your conversion pages stay weak, even when their content is excellent.
Several factors influence how much equity a link passes:
- Authority of the source page: a link from a strong page is worth more than a link from a weak one.
- Topical relevance: a link between two pages about the same subject sends a clearer signal.
- Position on the page: a contextual link in the main content carries more weight than a link repeated in a footer.
- Number of links on the page: the more links a page contains, the less value each one carries.
- Link attributes:
nofollowlinks tell search engines not to pass credit (see dofollow vs nofollow).
How to Check Your Link Equity Distribution
You cannot see link equity directly, but you can approximate it:
- List your most linked pages in Google Search Console (Links report, "Top linked pages", internal links).
- Compare that list with the pages you want to rank. Priority pages that receive few internal links are under-powered.
- Look for orphan pages with no internal links at all: they receive no equity. Our free orphan page checker finds them in a few minutes.
- Check pages buried deep in your structure: high link depth usually means little equity.
How to Distribute Link Equity Better
- Link from strong pages to priority pages. Your homepage, pillar articles and pages with backlinks should point to the pages that drive revenue.
- Use descriptive anchor text that tells search engines what the target page is about.
- Link related content together in topic clusters so authority circulates inside each subject.
- Fix broken links. A link to a 404 page wastes equity. Run the free broken link checker regularly.
- Avoid redirect chains in internal links: link directly to the final URL.
- Keep the number of links reasonable so each link keeps its value.
Link Equity on Webflow, WordPress and Wix
- Webflow: CMS collection pages often receive links only from a collection list. Adding contextual links inside Rich Text fields is the most effective way to send equity to them.
- WordPress: categories, tags and related-posts widgets spread equity widely but weakly. Contextual links inside posts and pages give you control over where authority goes.
- Wix: blog posts and dynamic pages are easy to leave isolated. Linking them from your main pages and from each other keeps them in the equity flow.
Common Mistakes
- Pointing most internal links to the homepage instead of to deeper priority pages.
- Linking every page to every other page, which dilutes the value of each link.
- Leaving links to redirected or deleted URLs after a redesign or migration.
- Adding
nofollowto internal links, which stops equity from flowing inside your own site.
How LinkerFlow Helps
LinkerFlow analyzes your content and Google Search Console data to find pages that should link to each other, then suggests contextual links with natural anchor text. You approve each link before it is published, and LinkerFlow keeps watching your site for broken links and orphan pages so equity keeps flowing where it should.
